NEWS

8.31.04

I've updated the site a little. Added a photo of our beloved drummer Shawn Grider, and I fixed our broken mp3 link. Now you can hear songs from our first two records without having to visit the now obsolete mp3.com. You'll also be able to hear some randomly chosen tunes from our ever growing, 600+ song archive. These songs are old, new, finished and unfinished and have little lives of their own. Some may find their way to future recordings, others will not. We are still working on what will be our 3rd album, be patient, good things are coming.

12.04.03

Hello! Yes, yes,I know it's been a while since I updated this site, sorry about that! We've been enjoying a mellow 2003, we decided to lay low and tend to the other things that make up our lives. It's nice to do that once in a while. Anyway, mp3.com is no more...so we'll be posting our songs on this site only. So if you click on the mp3 link, it probably won't work. We're also going to be giving this site a hip new look... just for you!

Lastly, we've begun the adventure that is the recording process. When we are finished, we will hold in our hands our third album. It will shine like a baby seal at Sea World, yet it will creep and rustle, like the very ground on which you stand!

7.21.03

Our next show will be Friday, August 1st at the Triple Rock. Joining us for this evening of enchantment will be A Whisper in the Noise and First Prize Killers. If you aren't doing anything that night, come to the show.

5.12.03

When speedwalking around the fine lakes of this fine city, I often gaze into the blur that is the water and think about things like the blue daisies printed on the side of dixie cups and toothbrush advertisements. Random? Yes, which makes for a nice segway to the point of this message...Work of Saws new mp3's and upcoming show info.

Speaking of "segway"...the Friday before last, I was nearly run down by none other than Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea. He was riding on one of those fancy Segway scooters at the intersection of 7th and Nicollet. I was a pedestrian, walking back to work when he came flying in from my right side. He stopped just short of my upper shins. "Sorry" he said - with a big smile on his face - he was very polite. He then scooted off. I should note that he was dressed like a Ringling Brothers knife thrower which, coupled with the scooter, added fuel to the "Look at me!" fire.

Enough about successful musician sightings...

NEW TUNES 4 U:

I recorded some songs at home last week on the 4-track and put them up on our mp3 page. Click on the mp3 link to hear them, or save even more time and click here.

The songs are:
-Moon In A Jar
-Bee (Thunder is Just God Snappin His Fingers)
-The Bright Houses

NEXT SHOW:

Saturday, May 31st at First Avenue with the talented Chan Poling. Go to the Shows section for more info.
I've enjoyed our chat. Goodbye.

4.14.03

Hi. There are some new updates on this site. I added some new design links that you may or may not find interesting. These are my favorites and I suggest you visit them:

Rinzen
- Group of designers who do some pretty cool work spanning print, web design, illustration, fonts, animation and music.
Lobo - Cutting edge design house from Sao Paulo, specializing in motion graphics and animation for web and film.
Insert Silence - James Patterson's (Presstube) new project. He's been getting some major notoriety, working with Diesel, Bjork and Nike.
Lecielestbleu - What's life without originality? Check out Puppet Tool.

There are more new links too, these are just the sites that really impressed me. Report any broken links you may come across and I'll do my best to repair them.

What about Work of Saws you ask? Well, we've been comfortably slouching through 2003 so far and that's been nice. We will probably begin working on a new recording sometime this spring or summer. I may put up some new mp3's soon, so keep checking the mp3 section. We contributed a song "The Pharmacists Petty Crime" to the 2003 Art-A-Whirl compilation cd. Go out and get that record if you're eager for a new WOS song. Our next show will be in late May with Chan Poling at First Avenue Mainroom! Fun!

2.21.03

How is your February? That is fantastic! Here is some Work of Saws related news for you.
Tonight we play a show at the Entry with the Melismatics and Rhombus. We play the second slot which means we'll be going on stage around 10:30. This will be a special show for special people.

Also...I have some art and design work currently on exhibit at the new Creative Electric Studios gallery in North East (22nd and 2nd Ave NE to be exact). The exhibit entitled "Tenderness Can Be Learned" features new work by myself, Mike Brady and Tony Mogelson. If you missed the rousing opening last Saturday night, you can make ammends by stopping by any available Saturday during gallery hours (10-4) through March. Don't leave without snaggin' a free Tenderness Can Be Learned comb.

Well, that is all once again. Bye-bye.

1.27.03

Greetings,
How are you? That is great. We'll be playing at the new Kitty Kat Club on Saturday, February 1st with A Whisper in the Noise. You should come to the show if you aren't doing anything. It will be fun. We performed live last night on KQRS fm 92.5 "KQ Homegrown." We played one new song and a couple of not-new songs. I'm going to be updating our mp3 site soon and I'll probably include some live stuff from past radio appearances. It will be nice. You will like it.

Speaking of songs, I have some new ones. We will be putting them to tape sometime soon I think. If you ever have a song title that you think is cool, email it to us and if I like it, I'll write a song around it.

Well, that is all for now. Good bye!

12.11.02

Thanks for coming out to the Entry last Friday. It was a fun night and a great final show for 2002. Check back for info on upcoming shows for next year. If you weren't able to attend the show last week, perhaps you're wondering "How was the show?"
Well, visit this link at HowWasTheShow.com to find out!

12.04.02

Hello there, you have been patient so here is some Work of Saws news for you.

Show on Friday:

Our last show of the year will be this Friday, December 6th at the Entry. We'll be playing 2nd, between openers Big Giant Robot - whom I have never seen - and Divorcee, a band you don't want to miss. It will be a fun and possibly festive evening. Perhaps we will break out our favorite Holiday sweaters. Perhaps not. Everyone seems to like those mechanical deer made up of Christmas lights. Maybe we'll get one of those for the stage. We'll be performing a couple of newer songs. One is called "The Female Racecar Driver" and it's about a woman who drives racecars for a living and puts her husband through art school. They dream of moving to Florida where they will spend their days painting pictures of alligators. We'll also play an old song, but it's new to you because we've never recorded or performed it live. It's called "Life Without Music is Dull". It's one of the first songs I ever wrote. Go to the shows link for more information about Friday's show.

Site update:

I finally put up some new photos on this site. Go check them out. Some are from our Pious Flats release show at the Suburban World earlier this year, some are from when I went to New Zealand back in January. I also threw in some random pictures.

Good use of the letter N:

Shawn "Grinder" Grider is now bangin' drums for us! He's a familiar face in the Minneapolis music scene, having played with Steel Shank, The Spring Collection, Divorcee - and our good friends, Faux Jean! He comes complete with a devil-may-care facial expression and a game-over attitude. We're excited! He'll be bangin' away this Friday. Give him a pat on the back when you see him.

Songs:

I wrote a lot of songs this year. They're all housed in little Maxell cassettes waiting for a life outside. Usually I post up some demos on our mp3 site, but alas - I have been lazy. I will try to be unlazy and make some mp3's.

That's all for now, happy year-coming-to-an-end days!

Radio Report:

Well, we sent The Pious Flats to 300 radio stations back in May and it received airplay on 270 of them, spanning 44 states and parts of Canada. Even Delaware played the record. Sometimes I forget about Delaware, with it being way up in the corner.

Anyway, we thought that was some good news. Thanks for playing and supporting the record everybody and thanks to Jerry at Tinderbox for the hard work.

Other stuff going on:

-The Pious Flats has received a nomination in the Best Pop Recording category of the 2002 Minnesota Music Awards.
-We recently played a little acoustic set at the MPR stage at the State Fair. It was a good time, a variety show put on by Word of Mouth. Dylan Hicks played as well as the House of Mercy Band, a comedy troupe and some poets. You can go to mpr.org and listen to excerpts from the show.
-Work of Saws will be featured in an upcoming issue of The Foundation (First Avenue pub).
-We'll be playing at the Entry on September 23rd. Grinder of Faux Jean will be sitting in on drums.

Well, that's all for now

8.05.02

In the July issue of New Music Monthly (Flaming Lips cover), page 62 highlights the Top 75 albums of June with Work of Saws' The Pious Flats coming in at #72 (due to our chart standings on the CMJ Top 200).

7.31.02

I'll be playing a solo set next Thursday, August 8th at the 400 Bar. Mike Brady will also play a set as will Martin Devaney and his band. Speaking of the 400 Bar, tomorrow night the Shins are playing - it should be a really cool show.

7.15.02

More reviews for our record, this time in indie zines Delusions of Adequacy and Lost at Sea. Read them while drinking a six-pack of Tab.

7.11.02

East Bay Express, San Francisco's news and arts weekly, has a nice review of The Pious Flats in this week's issue.

7.08.02

Howdy

I spent the last few days firing a potato gun in Montana. That was fun. What did you do for the 4th of July? Anyway, the music gardeners at Splendid have posted a review for The P.F. go here to read all about it...or go here to learn about potato guns!

SUMMER DRUMMER BUMMER
Our beloved drummer, Mr. Greg Barnell, wants to kick back with an ice-cold Tab and enjoy a drum-free Summer. Bummer. In the meantime our friend Grinder, champion rythym-master of rocksters Faux Jean will sit in and play during our show at the Uptown on July 20th. Greg's final Summer show will be with us on Friday, July 19th at the Entry with Terry Eason and the Barnacles. Come down and watch him work. Remember, Greg is the Mayor of Drum Town!

SOLO AT THE SOO
I'll be playing a short solo set this Saturday, July 13th at 7:30pm at Soo Visual Arts on 26th and Lyndale. The evening is a hosting benefit from Flaneur Productions who will be traveling to Edinburgh, Scotland to perform Soft Sleepers, a play by company member Jim Bovino. Music, art, live auction, refreshments...does it get any better? I think not. Starts at 4pm, ends at 1am.

I apologize for neglecting the photo section of the site. We have a vast collection of shots patiently waiting to be uploaded. I'll tend to this soon.

6.13.02

Go here to check out the CMJ review of The Pious Flats. It will be in the June 17th issue of the magazine.

6.05.02

Here's some cool news! Our record has risen all the way up to #72 (and climbing) in the CMJ Top 200 Chart. The record has also been chosen for review in the June 17th issue of CMJ Magazine, which we're happy about since they only review 5% of the cds the receive.

Summer is here at last! There are some great shows coming up this summer in the Twin Cities. Start things off by checking out Mike Brady's album release show this Friday night (June 7th) at the Dinkytowner. His new album "As Long As the Day is Long" is really cool. Latchhook will be opening. Visit Mike's website for more info. We have a show coming up at the Minnetonka Center For the Arts. Go to our shows link for more info.

5.15.02

Our album The Pious Flats is now at radio and it's been doing very well. We were #11 in the CMJ Top 20 adds for our April 30 release date. We were also #5 in the CMJ Triple AAA chart, which I'm sure is pretty good too. Thanks to the MDs at college radio for playing and charting our album and thanks to the listeners nationwide for the nice emails.

The Pious Flats is currently #141 on the CMJ Top 200 chart, which is even better than last years M&WTG peak of #151.

I guess that's all I have to say for now. Keep your eyes and ears open for all things invisible.

5.03.02

New to my cd player: Mike Brady's As Long As The Day Is Long
I highly reccomend checking out this record, for it is a wonderful listen. From the backwoodsy flow of "Long Days" to the dark/happy/dark twist of "Miami." You'll love it!

Also in my cd player:
The Shins - Oh, Inverted World
The Kinks - Village Green Preservation Society
Rivulets - Rivulets
Guided by Voices - Universal Truths and Cycles (early promo - hurray!)

A certain observation regarding our new album has prompted the following album fact:

The album cover has absolutely NO Photoshop filters or retouching effects.
Every blue dot was manually stuck on that wall and on the guy in the photo.

If you would like to order some blue dots of your very own and stick them all over your pets, friends and family, go here.
Lastly, I am consistently adding new links to the links page. Yesterday I added some new zine links. Check them out!

4.30.02

Here's some nifty new press regarding the new album and the band:

review in the St. Paul Pioneer Press - by Jim Walsh, 4/26/02

BIG, HEARTY THANKS!

Hello,
We want to send out a gigantic thanks to everyone who packed the Suburban World Theater this past Friday for our album release show! We greatly appreciate your support and we hope you had a fun night. Thanks also to Kid Dakota and Rivulets who both played amazing sets. All in all, is was a great evening, just about everyone left with a little blue dot stuck to their clothing.

The album will be in stores tomorrow! So if you didn't get a copy at the show, feel free to pick one up at your favorite record store. Our next show will be on May 10th at the Walker Art Center, hope to see you there.

SONG ON THE K

Radio K has added one of our new tunes to their playlist. Invisible Darts was the kebut last Friday! Drop Radio K a line at 626-4770 or email them at request@radiok.org if you'd like to hear this song. It's a nice song about summertime and things that are lost. Jim Walsh likes it, maybe you will too.

I was on MPR's Word of Mouth last Friday, click on the link below if you'd like to hear the fine interview conducted by Mr. Chris Roberts.

WOS on KFAI 90.3fm

Dave and I will be on KFAI's In Your Ear tonight (4/24) from midnight to 2am. We'll be talking to host Angie Pykonen about the new album and we'll be pretending that we're dj's by playing some of our favorite songs from our favorite bands. If you're having a hard time sleeping, tune in and drift off in no time.

WOS on Minnesota Public Radio

I'll be on MPR's Word of Mouth talking with host Chris Roberts about band related things. Our chat will air this Friday at 6 - 6:30pm and again at 11pm. After listening to the program, head over to the Suburban World for our music show.

4.15.02

Hello,
We're gearing up for our album release show at the Suburban World this month. The Pious Flats will be in stores on April 30th - but you can get it right now through paypal by clicking here. I've yet to mention info about the album regarding its production, so I'll do that now.

FUN ALBUM FACTS

We recorded this album from November 2001 - March 2002 at Dave's apartment. Most of the album was mixed by our good friend and fellow musician John Hermanson (Alva Star, Storyhill). Additional mixing was provided by the talented Jeff Barnell. Luke Harper and our very own Dave Salmela also did some mixing. The album was mastered by Luke Harper at Two Fish Studios in Mankato. Some of our special musician friends also lent their talents on the album. Mike Brady played some banjo and guitar, Mike Andrew provided some cool lap steel, John Hermanson played some amazing violin on a couple of tracks, Catherine Campion played cello and Dave's uncle, Steve Rossini, played some upright bass. Flavia Medeiros and Alyn Davis put down some lovely backing vocals too.

Unlike our debut release, this new record contains only 16 songs. Some are short and some are long. The entire album clocks in at around 38 minutes, which means you can listen to virtually the entire thing while watching reruns of Who's The Boss.

There is a rumor (started by me) that suggests there are some ultra-secret songs hidden on the album. I have chosen not to comment on this.

Once again we are releasing this album through our very own Thick Furniture label, but this time we are working in conjunction with No Alternative Records. We will be distributing this album through our friends at Tinderbox Music.

Would you like to view the album cover? YES / NO
The idea for the cover came to me while riding the bus one grim, blustery winter day. Thanks to Curtis Johnson for his fine photography and time. Thanks also to Ryan Sweere, who had to hold pose for a long time. Thanks to U-Line, the shipping supply specialists and their vast assortment of blue, round stickers.

Important upcoming WOS show news!

I just learned that I have to fly out of town on January 22nd for work. (UUGGHH) I will be out of town through mid February which means that we, regrettably, will NOT be able to participate in the following scheduled shows:

Wed, January 23rd - Best New Local Bands of 2001 Show at First Avenue (see shows link for more info)
Friday, February 1st - Show with Mark Mallman at the Turf Club (see shows link for more info)
Saturday, February 2nd
- the Loring Cafe - Rivulets CD Release Party (see shows link for more info)

I wish that my travel itinerary was something I could control, but I can't. We are severely bummed about having to miss these shows, please go out and have fun at these venues without us!

That's all for now,
Brock

1.14.02

Happy New Year!
City Pages recently chose "Motivation and Watertower Grammar" as the second best local album of 2001! Go here to see the whole list. Also, the "Apartment Music" compilation is nearing the final stages. We have two brand-spankin' new tracks on the album - "Texa Tonka Annex" and a cool song that Dave wrote called "Moving the I to C". Keep checking back here for updates on the comp and the shows accompanying it's release.
That's all for now. Bye.

12.14.01

Wow,
Look at how long it's been since I've updated our site! Aside from this paragraph, I've also updated the "shows" section. So be sure and stop by there before you leave.

Well, we've been recordin' a little and taking it easy too. Hope everyone got the chance to catch the local band BoggleTournament on KFAI's Local Sound Department (with host The Dan One). We actually ended up winning the competition. Hurray for us! Participants included Jamie Ness, Mark Mallman, Mike Brady, Karla and Kate from Radio K's Off The Record, The Ashtray Hearts and Dave from Janis Figure. All teams put on a grand Boggle display, but in the end it came down to WOS vs. The Ashtray Hearts. Supposedly the two guys from A.H. had never played Boggle before, which was hard to believe considering how easily they were able to locate words like "glib" and "git". It was a fun time indeed.

Work of Saws have a couple of new songs that will be featured on an upcoming compilation cd from Free Election Records. "Apartment Music" will feature two new tracks from the likes of Kid Dakota, The Ashtray Hearts, Mike Brady, Quillan Roe, The Owls and Florida. It's sure to be a smash hit so be sure to camp out overnight in the Cheapo parking lot so you can be first to claim this local gem. The cd is scheduled to be released in late February.

Well, that's all for now. Hope you have a wonderful holiday season.
What do I want for Christmas you ask?
This!

10.26.01

Hey, I put up a new song on our mp3 site. Check out "Harmattan Teeth."
Hope everyone is having a good Autumn.

10.17.01

Well, Fall is upon us...is it not? The trees are bright, colorful and ideal for calendar photography. How have you been? That's great! What are you doing this Friday night? Why not go down to the Dinkytowner for Mike Brady's college party. It will be fun, you know it will. Speaking of Mr. Brady, he did a smashing job playing banjo with us in our NY/CMJ show this past weekend. He also bought a bootleg vhs copy of Zoolander while perusing Chinatown. (Does anyone out there have a vcr with a tracking function? I know Mike could use one of those.) Anyway, the show in NY was grand, but now we look to the future...

We are currently recording some new tunes for our second album which we hope to release in April of next year. As I've mentioned, we've slowed down our live shows to devote to more writing and studio time. Although, we will be performing an acoustic show at the Dinkytowner next Tuesday, October 23rd. We will also be playing a rockin' HALLOWEEN show at the Space 150 party hosted by Mr. Bill Jurewicz. Come dressed in a nifty costume. (Space 150 always has the "phattest" parties.) Other than that, we will be somewhat dormant. By the way, I recently put a new tune on our mp3.com page. Check out this demo-esque version of our new song "Weapon".

Well, I'm tired of typing so I'll talk to you later. Bye

9.27.01

In light of the tragedy that occured in New York earlier this month, the CMJ Music Marathon has been postponed to October 10 - 13. We are scheduled to play on Saturday, October 13th at the Den at Two Boots. It still seems a little early for this event to continue, but we'll see how things shape up between now and then.

We wanted to say thanks to all the WOS fans out there who've been coming out to the shows. They wouldn't be fun without you guys supporting us and laughing at our posters of Lou Diamond Phillips. We've been playing a ton of shows lately so we're gonna slow things down a bit and take some time to write, record and relax. Aside from CMJ, our next show will be on October 23rd at the Dinkytowner with Jamie Ness. The show will be primarily acoustic, so come on down and bring a campfire with you.

8.27.01

Fun WOS news -
We've been invited to play at the 2001 CMJ Music Marathon! Our show will be Saturday, September 15th at The Den at Two Boots. We'll be playing with a cool band called Nova Social. We go on at 10:00, Nova Social at 11:00. This should be a fun show!

So...If you happen to find yourself in New York on September 15th, please come down and support WOS!

I thought I'd take this time to bring everyone up to speed on the life and times of our debut cd, Motivation and Watertower Grammar. Upon independantly releasing the album in April, we hooked up with Tinderbox Music and sent out 300 cd's to college radio stations for airplay consideration. However, with new releases from likes of Steve Malkmus, Blake Babies, Guided by Voices, Mogwai and Radiohead, we weren't sure how our album would fare. Turns out it fared pretty well, getting enough station adds to put it in the CMJ Top 20 adds of the week at #16. It also got enough airplay to bring it up to #151 on the CMJ Top 200 chart. Hello friends,
It's been a long time since I've typed in this tiny space. How have you been? We have been fine. The Summer has been hot and muggy. The squirrels are vicious and their mouths are full of teeth. Do not feed them. We will see you at our next show, which will be soon and at a place close to you. Maybe. I have been thinking and writing new things. I even thought about the Colossus of Rhodes. He is one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Go here to see an artists interpretation of him.

Ian Simpson of UK indie band The Beaker People has recorded a wonderful version of Work of Saws tune "Battery Man". Click here to download it now. Also, check out the rest of the fine tunes by The Beaker People at mp3.com.

6.5.01

Our recent 7th Street Entry show is now available for download at dcn.com. If you have a Realplayer, you can watch it. Our friends the Mike Brady Trio also have a concert for downloading. Check out their cover of our tune "Losing Vertical Hold" I like their version better than ours! Find both shows under the "what's new" section, or under the "bands" section.

5.17.01

We'll be playing a first ever ACOUSTIC show at the newly formed Sursumcorda on Saturday, June 2nd. (Where the Foxfire used to be) Dave will be out of town in Peru, so we'll strip things down and get all dramatic for the kids.
